St Augustine's RC Primary School

Art and Design

At St Augustine’s Catholic Primary School, we aim to nurture children’s creativity, imagination and ability to express themselves, while developing them into innovative thinkers and practical problem-solvers. Through our Art, Design and Technology curriculum, pupils are inspired to explore, interpret and shape the world around them using a wide range of techniques, materials and processes.

In Art and Design, we encourage pupils to gain a coherent understanding of visual language by studying a diverse range of artists, styles and movements from Britain and across the wider world. Through evaluating artistic works, both their own and those of others, pupils learn to think critically and reflect meaningfully on the ideas and emotions behind visual expression. By developing their skills in sketching, painting, sculpture and mixed media, children become confident in experimenting, refining and making creative decisions. We support pupils in recognising the value of the arts in shaping human experience, understanding cultural identity and appreciating the beauty and purpose of visual communication in everyday life.

In Design and Technology, pupils apply creativity in purposeful and practical ways. Through the iterative process of designing, making, testing and evaluating, they learn to take risks, adapt ideas and improve their outcomes through thoughtful critique. They explore key areas such as mechanisms, structures, textiles, food and digital technologies, using a range of tools and materials safely and confidently. Drawing on knowledge from across the curriculum, including maths, science and computing, pupils design with function, aesthetics and sustainability in mind. They also learn about significant designers, engineers and inventors, gaining insight into how design and technology have shaped the modern world.

By fostering curiosity, resilience, independence and collaboration, our curriculum equips children with the practical skills, critical thinking and creativity needed to thrive in an ever-evolving world. We aim for all pupils to leave St Augustine’s as confident creators, reflective thinkers and capable innovators.
